Option to Ignore Drive Time - Web & Mobile
Let's review Option to Ignore Drive Time - Mobile app
Overview and Why This is Needed
Sometimes situations arise when drivers forget to set themselves to On Duty – Yard Move or Off Duty – Personal Use, before starting to drive their vehicles. This creates a driving event in their logs that cannot be edited and changed to the correct status of YM or PC per ELD regulations. Drivers can annotate the event, and roadside inspectors should take the annotation into consideration while reviewing their logs, however it makes it very difficult for drivers to know how much time they would have had left if the driving status was set correctly from the beginning. They traditionally have had to keep track manually.
To help drivers with this situation, we have added the option to ‘ignore’ Driving events.
Ignoring the event will not change the status of the actual Driving event. It will still show as a Driving event in the driver’s logs. What it will do, is make the drivers’ lives easier.
The note drivers add when they select to ignore the driving event will automatically be added to the Driving Event in their logs so roadside inspectors will see it and know to disregard the event.
The driver will also select an alternate duty status for the event to be used within BigRoad ELD. This alternate status is what the duty status of the event should have been if they hadn’t forgotten to set it before driving. That is, On Duty for Yard Move and Off Duty for Personal Use*.
In addition, the timers and violation notifications that appear to the driver in the mobile app will be adjusted to reflect what they would have been if the Alternate Duty Status had been selected from the start. This way the drivers don’t have to figure out what their remaining hours are manually anymore. But remember, their outward facing logs will still show the event as a Driving event with an annotation. This includes Inspection Mode and any electronic RODS submitted to FMCSA or Transport Canada.
Example – No On Duty Time & No Drive Time Remaining
Here is an example of the BigRoad ELD Home page which displays a day with no On Duty time and no Drive time remaining.
Follow the steps below to view the Home page example of no time remaining:
-
Login to the BigRoad ELD Mobile app
-
View the example on the Home page with no On Duty time and no Drive time remaining
Example – No On Duty Time & No Drive Time Remaining
Here is an example of the BigRoad ELD Log page which displays a day with no On Duty time and no Drive time remaining.
Follow the steps below to view the Logs page and an example of no time remaining:
-

View the example on the Logs page displaying with no On Duty time and no Drive time remaining
The Logs screen also shows no time remaining and the graph tells us that the driver went Off Duty just before 8:00am and back On Duty after 9:00am but did some driving in between. The reason there is no time remaining for the day in this example, is, under their Canadian rules, the driver requires 10 hours of off duty time in a day, with two of those hours not being part of a shift reset and in at least 30-minute blocks. The driver who owns this log has had no off duty time in 30-minute increments so far in the day, and there are fewer than 10 hours remaining.
In this scenario, the driving time between 8:00am and 9:00am was supposed to be Personal Use driving, but the driver forgot to select Personal Use before they started driving the vehicle. FMCSA and Transport Canada do not allow these driving events to be edited to show the correct duty status. If the driver in this log had selected personal use before driving, they would have had a block of off duty time of over an hour, so they would still have time remaining before having to go off duty for the day.
How To – Mark the Drive Time Event as Ignored
Since the driving event cannot be edited, we have added the option to mark the event as ignored. This can be done by navigating to the driver’s daily log for the day and selecting to Edit the driving event. At the bottom, there is an option to Ignore Event.
Follow the steps below to Edit a log and select the Ignore Event option:
-
Login to the BigRoad ELD Mobile app
-
Tap the Logs button
- Tap the View Logs button
- Tap the desired log day
- Tap the desired Event, and tap the Edit button
When ‘Ignore Event’ is selected, the driver will see a notification that explains what happens when this option is used.
- Tap Ignore Event
- Read the notification message that explains what happens when this option is used, and tap OK
-
Type in a Note explaining why you are ignoring the event (note is visible to the roadside inspector and it should indicate why they shouldn’t consider this to be driving time and what they should consider it to be instead).
-
Select an Alternate Duty Status to use for timer and violation calculations
If the driver forgot to select PC before driving, the alternate duty status should be ‘Off Duty’. If they forgot to select Yard Move, the alternate duty status should be ‘On Duty’.
- Tap the Save button
When the event is saved, the timers that show the remaining time for the day and the violation calculations will display as if the duty status were the alternate duty status. Otherwise, the event will continue to be considered a Driving event.
- View the example on the Log page - Driving event with the annotation and alternate duty status
In this example, you can see that the Driving event still shows as Driving, but it also indicates it was marked as Ignored with the alternate duty status of Off Duty (OF) in brackets. The annotation the driver added shows for the event as well.
The graph still shows it as a Driving event, because it still is, but the violation that showed previously is now gone.
How To – Un-Do the Log Edit Ignore Drive Time Event
If a driver decides they shouldn’t have ignored the driving, they can edit the event and uncheck the Ignore Event option and timers and violation calculations will return to normal.
Follow the steps below to Edit a log and un-select the Ignore Event option:
-
Follow the same steps on the previous slides for how to Edit a log and un-check the Ignore Event option
-
View the example on the Home page with the On Duty time and Drive time remaining
How To – View Annotation for Ignored Driving Event
Inspection Mode shows no indication of the fact that the driving event was ignored, except it includes the annotation the driver added when editing the event.
Follow the steps below to view the annotation for the Ignored Driving Event in Inspection Mode:
-
Login to the BigRoad ELD Mobile app
-
Tap Inspect Logs
- Tap the number of log days
- Tap Inspect On-screen
Any logs submitted to FMCSA or Transport Canada will also include the event as a Driving event, with the annotation, so the safety official knows they should take into consideration that the Driving was recorded in error.
Follow the steps below to view the annotation for the Ignored Driving Event in Inspection Mode:
- Tap the desired log day
- View the comment on the Daily Logs screen
Let's review Option to Ignore Drive Time - Web App
How To – View Annotation for Ignored Driving Event
Continuing with the same example from the mobile app, in the BigRoad web app an event that a driver has marked as Ignored, will continue to show as a Driving event in the graph and logs.
Follow the steps below to view the annotation for the Ignored Driving Event from the Web app:
-
Login to Unity
-
Select BigRoad ELD from the navigation panel
-
From the FC BigRoad Navigation Panel click Drivers
-
Select the desired Driver
The logs will have the label to indicate it was ignored and the alternate duty status as well as the annotation. Remaining time and violations will be displayed as if the event was the alternate duty status, but logs exported and sent to FMCSA or Transport Canada will show no indication of the ignored status and will show the event as a Driving event with the annotation.
The Dashboard also reflects timers and violations as if the alternate duty status was the actual duty status.
Follow the steps below to view the annotation for the Ignored Driving Event from the Web app:
-
Use the calendar icon to navigate to the desired day
-
From the Daily Log tab, view the annotation and the alternate duty status
How To – Mark a Drive Time Event as Ignored
Once a driver has signed their logs for the day, Safety Managers can also edit the driver’s logs and mark a Driving event as Ignored.
Here’s an example of a log where the Driving event caused a violation, but it should have been a Yard Move event.
Follow the steps below to edit the Drive Time Event from the Web app:
-
Login to Unity
-
Select BigRoad ELD from the navigation panel
-
From the BigRoad ELD Navigation Panel click Drivers
-
Select the desired Driver
-
Use the calendar icon to navigate to the desired day
-
From the Daily Log tab, view the violation (that should have been a Yard Move event)
-
Click the Edit Log button
A Safety Manager can mark that event as ignored. A warning message will be displayed letting the Safety Manager know what will happen when the event is marked as ignored.
Follow the steps below to edit the Drive Time Event from the Web app:
-
Click Edit from the desired event
-
Select the Ignore Event checkbox
-
Read the Ignore Event pop-up message and click OK
The note and alternate duty status must be populated.
Follow the steps below to edit the Drive Time Event from the Web app:
-
Type in a Note explaining why you are ignoring the event (note is visible to the roadside inspector)
-
Select an Alternate Duty Status to use for timer and violation calculations
-
Click the Save button
When the change is saved, the driver will have to accept the carrier edit as with any carrier log edit. Once that is complete, the results are the same as if the driver marked the event as Ignored.
